Jewelry of ancient Vietnamese 2,500 years ago

Leg and arm rings, earrings and rings made from many materials of the ancient Vietnamese in the Dong Son civilization 2500-2000 years ago are beings exhibited for the first time in Nghe An province.


In a series of activities celebrating the 126th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh (1890-2016), the Museum of Nghe An Province organized a special exhibition introducing antiques of Nghe An from prehistory time. The artifacts in the collection of jewelry of the ancient Vietnamese in the Dong Son cultural period (2500-2000 years ago) are a special section of the exhibition.

Leg rings collected at the archaeological site in Vac Village, Nghia Dan district, Nghe An in 1981. Leg rings are also used to prevent sharp objects from hitting the ankle.

Bracelet collected in Tan Ky district, Nghe An, which is said to be jewelry of the aristocracy. This suggests that the ancient society had a gap between the rich and poor.

The bracelets found at Dong Mo, Hung Thang commune, Hung Nguyen district. The ancient Vietnamese used simple, easy to find, and colorful materials to make jewelery, from stone to copper and glass.

Another kind of bracelet discovered in Dong Truong, Anh Son district in 2000. 

Most jewelry artifacts of Dong Son culture were obtained at the burial sites. 

The rings found at the archaeological site in Vac Village (Nghia Dan district) in 1973 and 1990. In the Dong Son culture, rings used to wear on the fingers, made from bronze, with a diameter of 1.5-1.6 cm.

This necklace was unearthed at the archaeological site in Vac Village (Nghia Dan district) in 1973. In the collection at the museum, there are 34 necklaces made of various material such as stone, glass and earthenware.

The jewelry collection of Dong Son culture in the museum consists of 495 exhibits, divided into 4 groups based on materials such as stone, terracotta, brass and glass.

The Museum also showcases hundreds of other precious artifacts found in Nghe An and dating back to the Dong Son culture. The highlight is the bronze drum discovered in Dong Hop commune of Quy Hop district in 2006. The drum has a diameter of 90 cm, the most valuable bronze drum in Nghe An.
